IV Gravi-Gamma-Nu Workshop

From multiwavelength to multimessenger: The new sight of the universe

OCTOBER 4-6, 2023

Gran Sasso Science Institute- L'Aquila, Italy

Overview

The past few years have been particularly exciting for the field of multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics. The direct evidence of TeV neutrino emission from the nearby active galaxy NGC 1068 reported by the IceCube Collaboration was a major step forward in multi-messenger astronomy. And 2022 will also forever be remembered as the year of the Brightest Of All Times (BOAT) Gamma-Ray burst 221009A. This record-breaking burst was the first to have emitted photons up to 18 TeV, as reported by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). While no multi-messenger observations were made of this burst, it represents a unique opportunity to further our knowledge in the field of GRBs in light of the upcoming O4 LIGO/Virgo/Kagra run.

This fourth edition of the Gravi-Gamma-Nu workshop will be dedicated to investigating some of the most exciting new observations in astrophysics of the last 2 years and the associated modeling/theory efforts. The workshop will take place over three days, the first will be dedicated to AGN and multimessenger science, the second on GRB221009A and transient science while the last day will be on the future of multi messenger astronomy.

Venue

The Gran Sasso Science Institute is located at the center of L’Aquila, which lays on a hill in the wide valley of the Aterno river and is surrounded by the Apennine Mountains, the beautiful Gran Sasso National Park. Only a hour and a half from Rome, L’Aquila is a combination of natural, historical, architectural, and cultural attractions. The monumental areas of the town center exhibits an elegant grid of palazzos and churches. On April 6, 2009, it was struck by a devastating earthquake, which resulted in hundreds of casualties and inflicted damage to between 3,000 and 10,000 buildings, many of historical interest. After ten years, proudly rising from the terrible destruction, the town has been rebuilt with the most sustainable and innovative anti-seismic architecture, and is now an alive and active center. The rebirth of the city has its roots in the enhancement of culture in all its aspects from fine arts to science. L’Aquila will offer to participants a large choice of fine restaurants (including slow/sustainable food restaurants), where taste the Italian culinary and wine traditions.

Workshop Venue

The 4th gravi-gamma-nu workshop will be held at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), which is an international PhD school and a center for research in the areas of Astroparticle Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Social Sciences.

GSSI represents a lively interdisciplinary environment. The Astroparticle Physics department counts approximately 20 Faculty members, 20 Fellows, 40 PhD students, and is steadily growing. The research lines in the astroparticle physics department cover experiments and theory related to gravitational-wave, high-energy cosmic-ray and multi- messenger astrophysics, and dark matter searches. GSSI is one of the most active nodes of gravitational-wave and multimessenger research in Europe. The institute benefits from a close collaboration with the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics, which is the largest underground research center in the world devoted to neutrino and astroparticle physics, and with the Osservatorio Astronomico d'Abruzzo, INAF. The GSSI hosts an auditorium for 300 persons. The conference room is fully wheel-chair accessible.
